Anatomy of the Hamstring Muscles

Hamstring MuscleThe hamstring has three seperate muscles located behind the upper part of the leg called the biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and the semimembranosus.

The Function of the Muscles

These muscles are located on the upper region behind the thigh, and there purpose is to move and stabilize the hip and the knee.

However, at the hip, all those muscles pull the hip backwards into extension, and that causes the knee to bend.

These muscles work when individuals are walking, running, and jumping. They work extremely hard during sprinting. Therefore, generally this muscle is being stressed out when sprinting which causes injury in that muscle.

Anatomy of the Muscle

These muscles are often divided into the medial (inside) and lateral (outside).

The muscles known as semitendinosus and the semimembranosus run down towards the tibia which is the bone on the inside of the lower leg. For that, the biceps femoris runs down to the fibula, which is the bone on the outside of the lower leg.

.......All three muscles all begin on the bottom of the pelvis.
