Football Training for Agility
In football training, the football players needs to be quick and agile to be a success during competition. 

All football player knows how important it is to have the speed, quickness, and agility to be a prolonged athlete in the game.  We will be discussing the development of your skills and abilites to help football players improve agility and an effective foundation.





An Effective Foundation


An effective foundation program for all football athletes is of course football conditioning, but primarily it would be strength training for football and a good football agility drills program.

A good and effective football agility drills program will consist of mastering explosiveness, quickness, speed, starting, stopping, and cutting.  However, practice does make perfect and developing these traits can make an athlete to an all-star during any types of competitions.

Now, during strength training, athletes will develop their maximal strength and explosive power.  A good football workout for strength would consist of power cleaning, squats and etc.....Football training is primarily preparing the athletes for games and any type of competition.





Football Agility Exercises


W-Pattern Cone

The main focus for this football workout is for the football player to concentrate mainly on the rapid starts and stops.
  1. These cones are placed in a long stretched out form of a W.
  2. The cones are placed about 10-12 yards apart.
  3. The player must run a straight line from one cone to another cone.
  4. Repeat the process several times.

Lateral Shuffle
  1. Be sure to have 12 cones.
  2. Place each cone about 5 yards apart.
  3. Also place the cones about 1 yard in front of the other.
  4. Perform lateral shuffle moves through the cones with good speed.
Tips: Never......cross your feet, and Always.....stay low to the ground.


Figure 8 Shuffle
  1. Place 2 cones about 2 yards apart from one another.
  2. When moving around the cones, make 6 shuffle movements in a figure 8 pattern.
  3. The direction of this exercise is then reversed so the process repeats itself.
  4. Repeat this exercise agian until you get the hang of doing it.
These were just a few football agility training programs.  There is unlimited amount of different training methods, however, there are plenty of other exercises and movement patterns that can be used.  Agility for football conditioning is very important for these athletes, so agility training must be practiced all year long even off season.
